_ My Approach:
Each person comes to therapy with a lifetime of coping skills that work for
them. My philosophy is based upon a strengths perspective that emphasizes encouraging people to first recognize and affirm those positive skills and then to build upon them. In other words do more of what works.
However, we need to also look at the behaviors and thoughts that each person also brings that they know are not working for them. Behaviors and thoughts that are not getting people what they want and need. On the contrary behaviors and thoughts that may even be pushing away the very opportunities and relationships they want the most.
My work is supportive, collaborative and focused. In initial sessions I will assist you in defining and choosing a problem, need or stressor you want to concentrate on changing. This will be our “contract”. Of course, there will be times when pressing issues come up and need immediate attention from us both and they will take precedence. Normally, however, I will help focus your work so that you can keep moving toward the goals you chose for your contract.
Therapy is a wonderful place to practice new skills. My approach is to encourage risk-taking in a non-judgmental and safe setting that allows you to explore and be yourself.
